The island of Cyprus is a wonderful place for a holiday. Paphos, a small picturesque harbour town, on the South-West of the island, is ideally located for just such a holiday.
Paphos old town, or Pano Paphos, also known as Ktima by the locals is situated on a hill and features everything from a covered market selling fruit and vegetables, meat and fish to designer label fashion shops.
A few kilometre’s south of Ktima is Kato Paphos, translated as Lower Paphos, it is also variously known as Nea Paphos, or New Paphos and is where most of the archaeological remains can be found.
Kato Pafos centres around a pleasant little harbour whose picturesque open-air waterside fish restaurants line the quayside, which is guarded by an ancient fort and a lighthouse not far away. Fishing boats and pleasure craft fill the harbour while Poseidonos street, the main street heading east, is lined with souvenir shops, taverna’s, hotels and yet more restaurants.
Paphos is believed to be the birthplace and home of Aphrodite, the mythical Goddess of Love and Beauty. see the Mythology page for more details It was also the Capital of Cyprus during part of its history.
