Windows for the Inxperienced

Preface

This book is not going to tell you how computers work. It is aimed at the person who knows nothing about computers, and is designed to give an introduction to how to use a computer from the ground up, in layman’s terms.

Since most new computers these days come with Windows XP installed, that’s the operating system we’ll concentrate on.

We’re going to assume that you’ve never had a computer before, and your first computer has just been delivered, and connected up by the dealer.

We’ll start right from the beginning, when you first switch on the computer.

There are certain conventions we will follow in this book. When referring to pressing a key, we will use Small Caps to describe the name of the key like this: press the ENTER key.

When referring to a menu or button item we will use the Tahoma font like this: select the Copy option.

Of course, if you don't have the Tahoma font installed you won't see any difference between these characters. If you're running linux, then I suggest you install the Tahoma font so that you can see the difference.
