Indian Weather Forecast

The old chief died and left the tribe in the hands of his son, the son unsure what to do goes to the medicine man and asks him "what are the duties of the chief" The medicine man explains that the chief is in charge of the welfare of the whole tribe, for instance he must ensure that there is sufficient firewood collected in case of any severe weather during the winter months!

The new chief thinks about this for a while then decides to send the women out to collect some firewood, just in case!! But not too sure of what he is doing, the new chief goes to the local Met office and asks the man what kind of a winter they are expecting, the reply was "Not too bad but not too certain yet" The chief went back to the reservation and casts an eye on the pile of firewood the women of the tribe had duly collected and thinks that possibly there is not enough, so he sends the women out again to collect more wood again.

Two weeks later he was in town and calls into the Met office again and asks the same question, the reply this time was "Could be very cold but a bit early to tell" The chief again went back to the reservation and cast the other eye on the pile of wood and thinks that possibly there is still not enough, so he sends the women out again to collect even more wood.

Next week in the Met office he again asks the question, how is it going to be this winter? to this the reply was "We are expecting a long cold hard winter" The chief again went back to the reservation and casts both eyes on the pile of firewood the women of the tribe had collected and still thinks that there is not enough, so he sends the women out again.

By this time the woods were getting devoid of any firewood and the women were getting tired of all this collecting so the chief decides to call into the Met office and do a final check, "just to be sure” his question was answered with a reply of “ It’s going to be bloody Cold, Freezing, Snow, Hail and Freezing Fog, in fact it will be the worst winter we have experienced in these parts for a long while”

The new chief was astounded by what he had heard and was very glad he had arranged the firewood for such a hard winter, but before leaving the Met office he asked the question, " How can you forecast such a hard winter? Is it based on past records, science, luck or just professional judgement?

No said the Met man "we just watch how much firewood the Indians collect"
