In lesson 1 we showed you how to create a basic web page. However, one web page by itself is a bit useless.
Now we're going to show you how to connect that web page to other pages. We'll start by creating links to other pages within your website, then later we'll expand to create links to other sites.
Go back to the Kompozer program and place the cursor at the end of the text you typed before and press the Enter key to move it down another line. Now go to the Insert Menu and select Link
The Link Properties dialog box will open. Type "About Us" in the field for the Link Text (without the double quote marks), and then in the Link Location field type the name of the next page you're going to create "aboutus.html" (again, without the double quote marks).
Save the file by clicking the Save button. Since you have already saved this file once before there's no need to do the "Save As" from the File menu, just click the Save button.
Now click the Publish button again to re-upload the file to your web server.
If you now refresh your browser, you will see your page with the new link added, however, if you click on it, you will get a 404 error, as the new page does not exist yet.
Click the New button in Kompozer, and a new tab will open on the right hand side called (untitled). Click the Format Menu and select Page Title & Properties just as you did before and give the page the title "About Us". Go to the File Menu and select "Save As" and give the page the filename "aboutus.html".
Now type some basic information about yourself in the right hand pane, then press Enter to move the cursor below your text and add a link just as before, but this time call the link "Home" and make the link location "index.html", click the Save button, then click the Publish button. Make sure that the Site Name is the same as when you published the first page of your site, and enter the Page Title and Filename, then click the Publish button.
Now when you go back to your browser, you will be able to navigate to the new page on your website, the About Us page, and navigate back to your Home page by the link on the About Us page.
You can go on creating new pages as your site expands and creating the links to navigate to them. Just remember that everything on the internet is case sensitive. If you put a capital letter anywhere in your filenames, the links to those files need to match exactly, which is why it is recommended to always use lower case for webpage filenames.
Now I'll show you how to add a link to another website. Move the cursor to the bottom of your About Us page, if necessary by pressing the Enter key a couple more times after your text, and type "To search the web:" then click the Insert Menu and choose Link, or just click the Link button. In the Link Text field, type "Click Here", then in the Link Location type "http://www.yahoo.com/" without the double quotes. You must add the http:// as the location of this link is outside your own website. Now click OK, click the Save button, then click the Publish button.
Now you have links to your own pages, plus a link to yahoo.com, and if you refresh your browser you will see this new link. If you click on it, it will take you straight to Yahoo.
In the next lesson we will show you how to make your pages stand out by adding coloured backgrounds and changing the fonts of your text.
