Changing the Background Colour

To change the background colour of your page, click the Format Menu and choose Page Colors and Background. The Page Colors and Background dialog box will open with the default setting; Reader's default colors. To change that, click the Use custom colors Radio Button.

There are 5 different colour selections you can make here, but the one we are interested in is the Background colour. Click on the small box next to where it says Background. A colour selection dialof box will open called Block Background Color.

There are several methods you can use to select a colour here. You can choose a pre-defined colour by clicking one on the right hand side. Notice also that when you click one of these buttons the Hex value will change at the bottom right, and also the name of the colour will change to indicate a primary colour, or go blank in the case of a non-primary colour.

You could also click somewhere in the left hand box for a shade that is not included in the pre-defined colours, or simply type a hex number in the Hex field anywhere between #000000 and #FFFFFF, but remember to type the # key first. You could also alter the Hue, Saturation, Brightness and individual Red, Green & Blue controls at the bottom left.

As a general recommendation, it is best to stick to light pastel colours with black text if you want your site to be readable.

So, select a colour and then click OK. You will be returned to the Page Colors and Background dialog box, with the background colour box changed to the one you have selected. Click OK again. Now your page will change to the selected background colour. Click the Save and Publish buttons to make the changes to your website.

In the next lesson we'll adjust font sizes and text colours to make your words stand out.
